Vegan Cookbook: From Scratch to Kindle

An American-Indian vegan couple approached SARAS Works with a publishing project – a cookbook that contained their collection of 50 oil-free vegan recipes. The couple had previously produced a prototype – lovingly prepared at home with mobile phone photography, with text and pictures put together on a Word document. They wanted a professional edition to share with the world through the Kindle store.

The task placed before SARAS Works was to produce a new version – replete with new photography, editing and design. To reach veganenthusiasts with minimum cooking experience and resources, the authors had collated recipes that fit a series of conditions: The recipes should have a maximum of 5 ingredients, andthe recipe could be prepared in under 30 minutes, with nine steps being undertaken in all.

The creative team at Saras Works studied the requirements carefully, procured the ingredients, hired a food photographer, and shot all 50 recipes within a tight timeline of just 10 days. Many of the ingredients had to be sourced from specialty food stores; as they were all perishable and wilted quickly in the heat, timing was of crucial importance. In addition, each stage of the recipe had to be captured – and at the best angle under the suitable lighting conditions. It meant planning for shoots of raw ingredients, in-process shots and the finished items from multiple recipes at one time.

During the production stage, the design team was faced with a bunch of layout challenges that needed a quick turnaround. The team had to produce multiple iterations to suit with the specific requirements from the client, as well as the stringent publishing norms of Amazon Kindle.

Throughout the journey, the creative team at Saras Works ensured seamless communication with the authors from across the globe and were able to get the book published within the expected timeframe. The proof is seen in the pudding, as the cookbook has now been received well by scores of vegan enthusiasts from around the world.
